I am lucky to have two, maybe three people in my life whom I call “no-pressure” friends. So, what does that mean? In short, without any bitterness or hard feelings, we let each other be free of obligations, loyalties, commitments, or pleas.
We deliberately try to avoid obliging each other to future commitments.
We understand that our freedom is equally important, so we never, ever force each other to do anything we KNOW the other person doesn’t like doing. Things that you want might be a separate part of your friend’s life. Respect that.
We never impose our different tastes on each other or expect each other to conform to our values.
There is no scorekeeping over who owes whom a dinner or a phone call.
I would never call a friend at 2 a.m. and drag them out of bed just to pick me up from the airport. If I just spent $5,000 on a vacation, I can afford a $30 Uber. Protecting their peace costs me only $30.
If we don’t hear from each other for a while, there is no resentment. No passive-aggressive “Look who finally remembered I exist.” We know life happens. We get it. And when we finally sit down for a conversation, we pick up right where we left off—unburdened and completely at ease.
We let each other be free to do whatever is in our own best interest, without pressure or expectations. These people are the rarest breed of humans, and having them in my corner is one of the quietest, deepest graces I know.
